2005 "Father of the Year" Essay Contest


Key Facts about the 2005 Father of the Year Essay Contest

  • Students in grades 1-12 attending Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD had the opportunity to write an essay in their English class about what their father or father-figure means to them.
  • Over 1,600 essays were submitted
  • Endorsed by the Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and the Mayor of Carrollton Becky Miller
  • A Celebration of Fatherhood Banquet was held to honor the winning essayists from each grade along with the five “Father of the Year Finalists,” which the 2005 Carrollton-Farmers Branch Father of the Year, Allan Herpin, was announced that evening. 135 people attended the banquet.
  • The Celebration of Fatherhood Banquet was on Tuesday, December 6, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza in Addison.
  • Scott Wilder, 100.7 FM Radio Talk Show Host, was the emcee at the banquet while the guest speaker was Rick Wertz, president of the Faithful Fathering Initiative in Texas.  
  • ½ of the schools participated by writing essays: 13 out of 25 elementary schools, three out of six middle schools and two out of four high schools.
  • Our essay contest information was included in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Newsletter and the “Focus” section of the Dallas Morning News.
